 Club Meeting Highlights

Meeting of 27 Jan 2011

By Sandie Dewane, Scribe

We were given a warm welcome by Greeter Don Lisio and prior to the start of the meeting, we dined to the sounds of John Hawkins on the piano and Jack Mitchell on the trumpet. Many of us agreed that Jack and his trumpet sounded better than ever!

President Suzie called the meeting to order at 12:30PM and led us in the pledge. Arilla gave an excellent invocation. A heartfelt "welcome back" was given to Jim Reading and Lou Anna Dickerson.

Don Lisio read a letter from Bill Bonner thanking everyone for their calls, emails and cards. Bill will be undergoing treatment in Arizona the next few months.

We had one guest today, Candace Smith, owner of Nannell's Flowers. Jack Mitchell led us in the welcome song and "It's a Wonderful World".

President Suzie thanked today’s volunteers: Set-up Paul Donick, Dan Malloy, Gary Saks and John Hawkins; Musicians Jack Mitchell and John Hawkins; Scribe Sandie Dewane.

She then asked Arilla St. Lauren to come forward and announce the December and January birthdays: Carl Hoffman Dec 24; Ann Calvert Jan. 17; Rich Finegold Jan. 28. Lou Anna announced that today was her mother’s 100th Birthday! President Suzie asked all the birthday people to help distribute the birthday cake that was sponsored by Sandie Dewane and Belmont Village.

Changing hats, Arilla filled in for a missing John O'Neill. Rather than doling out fines, she asked for Happy Bucks and several people willingly gave up some cash: Vern Cook, Sandie Dewane, Frances Blair, Sherry Collins, John Goodrich, Charley Crew, Dan Malloy, Bill Brown, Jim Wise, Jim Hyldahl and Jim Reading.

Our traveling member Ann Calvert shared some of her experiences on the road in her 32' motorhome. She has temporarily fled Oregon for sunny San Diego, and will be checking weather forecasts before she makes the trek back north. She promised to keep us posted on "Ann’s Wild Adventures."

Suzie announced that next week our Paul Harris Fellows will be recognized. Steve Riddle, still a member of our club though he lives in Newport Beach, will be joining us.

Larry Valente recently e-mailed regarding the upcoming Rave On performance. He has purchased tickets and will be letting us know the procedure for reimbursing him. Those who want to meet for dinner before the performance should contact Kathleen Smith.

Charley Crew announced that our Club and Interact Club are having a golf tournament April 6 at RB Inn. Next committee meeting is February 1, 6:30PM at the home of Barb and Charley Crew.

Carol Corey introduced today’s speaker: San Diego County Treasurer - Tax Collector Dan McAllister, who gave us updates on the tax system, collections in the county, the local economy, the housing market and county and state budget issues. Another great program; thanks Carol!
