 Club Activity Highlights

February 9th 2012 RB Rotary Newsletter

President Bill called the meeting to order with the statement that our Club supports Rotary World Understanding Month through international partnership with the Quito Norte Rotary Club in Quito, Ecuador. Benita led use in the flag salute and reminded us that there is no comma between One Nation and Under God. Maureen Rouleau read a very nice prayer from the Rotary Invocation Book and Charley Crew was our greeter in Dan Malloy's absence. Our President had a very beautiful Rotary shirt on that was made by women who had a micro credit grant in Zimbabwe and it was his way of reminding us that the is World Understanding month.

Jim Sommer, from the Family of Rotary, gave us an update on Carl Hoffman. He had been moved from the hospital (after a bout with pneumonia) to an assisted living facility where he fell and had to go back to the hospital. He is currently in a rehab facility and can be reached by phone or mail. Life Care Care Center of Escondido, 1980 Felicita Rd., Escondido, CA 92025. He is in room #120 and the phone number is 760-740-6891. His cell phone is 760-741-6109.

Dave Brooks and Ed Knight were recognized for their travel and efforts in Quito, Ecuador where they worked with the local Rotary Club on a safe water project.

Our club will host another mixer next Thurs., Feb. 16th from 5:30 to 6:30at the Urge in RB. Please support this effort and bring a prospective member. The cost is $10 and includes a drink and some very delicious snacks.

John O. and Karen made announcements about our upcoming golf tournament fundraiser. We still need players, sponsors and auction items. Please ask anyone you do business with if they could contribute an item or gift certificate to our club. John has fliers, letters and receipts printed up for our use. We also have fliers for players to sign up. Bill A. has worked very hard on a new web site so people can sign up online and pay through Pay Pal. He hopes to have it up and running by the 10th of Feb. but if you can’t find it, just try again at a later date. www.fairwaytohonor.org. Our next volunteer meeting will be at Charley Crew's on Thurs., Feb. 15th at 6:00 p.m. It would be nice if some of us brought a munchy or bottle of wine.

Pres. Bill brought in a large bag of Girl Scout cookies and Frances saved our waist lines by suggesting we buy the cookies and she will deliver them to The Warrior Foundation where our injured service men and women are undergoing treatment. What a great idea!

Starting next week, our club will embark on another food drive in conjunction with the Boy Scouts and Salvation Army. Please bring in non-perishable items and give generously as the need is greater than ever.

Mark Kersey introduced our speaker who was Christine Meyer from Rady Children's Hospital. Christine raises money in the form of major planned gifts to provide hope and healing to the hundreds of children they see each year. Rady Children's Hospital cares for 84% of the counties children and 50% have no insurance. Rady is a nonprofit hospital and relies solely on outside donations. They recently opened a 279,000 square foot Acute Case Pavilion to better serve their needs. Their mission statement is: "To restore, sustain and enhance the health and developmental potential of children through excellence in care, education, research and advocacy." No child is ever turned away. Rady is the safety net hospital for the region's nearly 1 million children.

Our meeting next week will be a talk on Ecuador's Safe Water Project and the Rotary District 4400 Project Fair in Quito, Ecuador. Our speakers will be our very own Ed Knight and Dave Brooks!

DON'T FORGET TO BRING IN FOOD ITEMS FOR THE NEEDY NEXT WEEK.

Respectfully submitted,

Karen Stelman, Scribe
