Minutes of Rotary Club of Rancho Bernardo for January 12, 2012
President Bill called meeting to order. .
Lou Anna Dickerson led the Pledge of Allegiance, and Tom Giles stepped up and provided an inspirationally short invocation emphasizing the power of personal ambition.
President Bill thanks all the volunteers helping to make the weekly meeting a success.
John Goodrich, Scribe
John Hawkins, background musician prior to meeting
Bob Barr, our most recent Red Badge, was the greeter and introduced guests, today for the first time in a long time there were neither guests nor visiting Rotarians. Unfortunately this resulted in the Club missing out on President Bills leading of the welcome song. The buzz is that President Elect Dave Brooks previousy lead a barbershop quartet, perhaps we bar guests and visitors until next Rotary year.
Family of Rotary Report: Karen Stelman advised the Club Sherry Collins has moved closer but still lives too far away to join our Club, but is hopeful soon. Her cancer is not improving but she remains in good spirits and would welcome an email from members. Jack Mitchell is in therapy but is still having a tough time, particularly since he cannot play his horn. And it was announced our good friend Fernando, our who takes such good care of us at the Club insuring the food is nothing but the best, and plentiful, has recently had an operation. We all wish him a fast recovery. Perhaps there is a correlation between the absence of Larry Valente and our chef being out of commission.
President Bill made his weekly “In the Bull’s Eye” report and this week he focused on Rotary’s clock located at Webb Park. It is truly a monument where everyone driving by and walking the paths can see evidence of Rotary in the community.
Charley Crew repeated his announcement that all grant applications, for the Club foundation, need to be submitted by January 26. The board will review and vote on the applications on February 8.
President Bill reminded members of the RB Rotary Happy Hour meeting begins again on the first and third Thursday of each month. He encouraged everyone to come and join the fun. Bring prospective new members, especially those who may not be able to attend the lunch meeting.
The annual Foundation golf tournament is fast approaching. John O’Neill announced the need for all members to assist in some way. The Tournament is scheduled for April 2 at the Country Club of RB. Please seek him out with an offer of help.
Troy Daum is RYLA coordinator and announced the upcoming RYLA conference being held April 20th-22nd. The Club is sponsoring two kids from Del Norte High School and RB High School and he asked for one more facilitator. Quickly and with great enthusiasm Steve La Pointe jumped in and offered his skills as a facilitator. It is hoped Steve knows what he is getting into as being a facilitator is not easy.
Poway Rotary Club is celebrating their 50th year anniversary and has extended an invite to any member of our Club who wants attend the ceremony. It is scheduled for January 25, at Maderas Golf Club at noon and the cost is $30. Confirm with Bill if you wish to attend.
Joe Max and Robyn Andrews both lost their red badge and have graduated to the full membership status. Congratulations to the both of them.
The Club Sergeant of Arms, John O’Neill, the always handsome charming fine master was in superior form today and generated a few shillings for the Club treasury. Happy bucks were plenty and contagious today. Steve La Pointe was uncharacteristically generous which was most appreciated. His comment of Troy Daum’s natural toupee was confusing to our table. If that was Troy’s natural look maybe he is better off going with an artificial hairpiece, or maybe look at extensions as his natural look is missing a key element, hair. Jim Hyldahl opened his wallet particularly wide and recognized the work of Bill Bonner and his leadership in the Rotary clock project. Even President Elect Dave Brooks was caught in the Rotary clock matter, reluctantly he paid up for his dropping the ball (actually dropping the paint can) on the recent restoration project, leaving John Goodrich holding the brush, which he also had to pay up for not finishing the painting. And both Frances Blair and Rick Bramble had to pay up for being irritable, thanks to the always cheerful effervescent vivacious Jeanne Hawkins for bringing their petulance to the attention of the Club. Irritable members are not allowed, or at least it will cost them.
Before the meeting concluded Arilla St. Laurent played auctioneer/plant whisperer and garnered some money from a beautiful potted plant. It is rumored Arilla talks to her plants more than to Chuck. The auction was hot to start but Paul Donick was the eventual winner. One can tell which member is in domestic hot water during plant auction day.
Mark Kersey introduced the speaker for today who was Paula Brandes from the San Diego Automotive Museum. Paula shared the many wonderful things happening at the museum and she invited us all for a visit. She provided a free three months membership certificate to the museum to all Rotary members
Meeting was adjourned.
