President Suzie, who was looking confident and relaxed, opened the meeting.
Shirley Napierala capably handled the Pledge of Allegiance and Dan Malloy filled in with a fine invocation. The indestructible Jack Mitchell led us in a spirited version of "Grand Old Flag".
President Suzie opened the meeting by thanking greeter Jim Edwards, and John O'Neill for the scribing duties. Jim introduced Marty’s guest, Mark Kersey. Suzie also acknowledged the invaluable assistance of our setup crew Dan Malloy, Paul Donick, Gary Saks and John Hawkins. Suzie introduced our guest and Jack regaled him with our special welcome song.
Troy Daum announced that he was providing occasional meals to Jim and Irene Reading while Jim was recuperating from his health problems, and asked for others to join in supporting this effort.
Ed Knight showed us how the Rotary Rose Bowl float was planned and constructed.
Arilla St. Laurent wrapped up the dictionary project with some creative responses from the kids who received their books.
Arilla announced the February 10 Valentine's Day celebration meeting/party, featuring musical entertainment by Rotary District band California Cogs (with our member John Hawkins on keyboard). The meeting portion is expected to begin at 12:15PM and be short to allow for the band's full performance. Arilla passed out a sign-up sheet, and asked to tell her if you are bringing guests that day, so we can inform the country club.
John O'Neill reported on the successful first volunteer meeting for our golf tournament fundraiser scheduled for April 6. A total of 29 club members and Interact Club members stepped up to volunteer at the event.
John then took the opportunity to solicit Happy Bucks from the generous attendees.
Our program was "Big Animals for Little Kids" presented by founder Frank Fernicola. Their purpose is to bring smiles, hugs and memories into the lives of children, especially at-risk and underprivileged children. They visit children in homeless shelters, hospitals and foster care facilities. During an event, they dress in animal costumes, paint their faces, take pictures of the children with Big Animals and use the photo to create a "picture button" souvenir for them. Firm president Jody Decker, dressed as an elephant, took many fine photos with our club members.
Suzie announced that our speaker for next week is San Diego County Treasurer Dan McCallister. In a smooth and convincing manner, President Suzie rang the bell and adjourned the meeting.
