We were welcomed today by Greeter Don Glover. President Suzie Lisio called the meeting to order at 12:15 p.m. because of a very full agenda. Don welcomed one visiting Rotarian, our very own Mike Stelman. We also had numerous guests, including parents and school counselors, with us today in honor of five students who are our scholarship recipients. Larry Valente, did a fine job in leading us in the welcome song.
President Suzie thanked today's volunteers: Paul Donick, Bill Bonner and the rest of the set-up crew and Sandie Dewane as scribe.
Jack Mitchell arrived just in time to lead us in a Happy Birthday song to Lew Tyler, who is celebrating his 80th birthday. Dividing his time between San Diego and Australia has kept Lew looking much younger – congratulations, Lew! Jack also led us in singing "Thank Heaven for Little Girls" in honor of all the ladies in Rotary.
President Suzie reminded us that on June 7 the Governor’s Banquet will be held at Crowne Plaza. We can signup at the District website, however if you want to take advantage of 50% discount, please pay Jim Reading. If anyone has questions, call or email Suzie.
Diane Law distributed our Vocational luncheon assignments with the following hosts: Pat Kenney, Diane Law, Dan Malloy, Marty Judge and Bob Wells. The vocational lunches will be next week, May 26. Do not come to Bernardo Heights Country Club.
Past District Governor and Treasurer of the Miramar Semper Fidelis Club Mike Stelman inducted Maureen Rouleau into our club. Maureen’s sponsor is Karen Stelman. Welcome Maureen - we're glad that Karen is persistent!
Don Lisio gave the sunshine report. Bob Wells is recovering from back surgery at Casa de las Campanas. He is doing well and welcomes visitors, especially those who are bearing gifts of fine wines. Bob Krejci is in the process of down-sizing and Don suggested we contact Bob to see if he needs any help.
Don Lisio had the pleasure of introducing the recipients of our club's RBHS Scholarship program. They are Sarah Chung, Alex Sklueff, Ileen Chen, Marcos Melendez and Kelly Luyken. The students briefly introduced themselves and told us about their interests and the colleges they have chosen. Sarah, who has been in the student orchestra for many years, surprised us by playing her violin for us. It was an awesome performance. Congratulations to everyone – what a talented group! Don also introduced the students' parents and RBHS counselors.
FineMaster John O'Neill was back with us today. He asked his golf tournament co-chair, Marcos Melendez, to join him as they presented the Traveling Country Club Competition Trophy to Larry Valente and Bernardo Heights Country Club. Arilla begrudgingly took their picture. There's always hope next year for Arilla and the Country Club of Rancho Bernardo. John then asked for happy bucks and numerous people were willing to part with their dollars.
Gary Saks announced that we are fortunate to have an outstanding program on June 9 when The Fort Bend Boys Choir of Texas will be entertaining us. The members of the group are between the ages of 9-13 years and have performed in this country and abroad.
Vern Cook then introduced today's speaker – Gabriela Brown who gave an excellent presentation on "Navigating the Continuum of in-home Care." Thanks, Gabriela, for an informative and eye-opening talk.
The meeting was adjourned.
