Serving the RB Community
Rancho Bernardo Rotary is a group of 80 men and women who live and work in RB area. Since 1963, it has sought to provide fellowship for its members focused on dedication to community and world service.
Membership is open to those who hold or have held decision-making positions in their business, profession, or community service organizations and who wish to join with like-minded men and women in Service Above Self. RB Rotary is a part of the worldwide organization of Rotary International.
Four Avenues of Service
Rotary clubs organize along four
Avenues of Service, each avenue expressing a particular emphasis for service. The four avenues are:
- Club Service
- Vocational Service
- Community Service
- International Service
In each of these areas RB Rotarians serve through a variety of activities, often joining with those in other clubs, including the worldwide network of Rotary Clubs, which includes over 1.3 million men and women in 972 countries.
Club Service
RB Rotary meets weekly at noon Thursday at the Stoneridge Country Club. Members have responsibility for organizing meetings, room arrangements, food, microphones, and projection equipment for speakers. The Club's Program committee plans weekly programs from government, business, and the professions. Guests of members are introduced and Rotarians from other clubs are welcomed. Activities promoting fellowship and interesting meetings - along with behind the scenes work to keep a large group organized and working - are part of Club Service.
Vocational Service
Each Rotarian has opportunities to demonstrate Rotary's ideals and aspirations in daily work and service. RB Rotary shares this vision in various ways with emphasis on supporting local educational institutions in preparing students for the work place. RB Rotary works closely with community youth groups such as the Scouts, Boy's and Girl's activities, plus special events that may develop during any given year.
Community Service
Rancho Bernardo Rotarians want the RB Community to continue to be strong and healthy. In organizing the RB Rotary Foundation (a separate, not-for-profit organization), RB Rotary created a mechanism to increase significantly its contributions to the RB community. Organizations that have benefited from local Foundation Grants include Meals on Wheels, RB Senior Center, annual Flu Shots snd July 4th celebrations. Grants to organizations from the Foundation are recommended by the Club's Community Service Committee.
International Service
RB Rotary supports student exchanges-students coming from outside the U. S. to live in Rancho Bernardo and attend local schools. This also includes students from Rancho Bernardo going to other countries as Rotary Exchange Students. Rancho Bernardo Rotary sponsors grants for service projects abroad, often obtaining matching grants from Rotary District 5340 and Rotary International. Financial support for a variety of projects includes the worldwide eradication of polio with Rotary' Polio Plus program in conjunction with the World Health Organization and an orphanage in Mexico.
The Four Way Test
Devised in 1932 by Rotarian Herbert J. Taylor as a code of ethics for the employees of his business, it was adopted by Rotary in 1943, and has become one the most widely printed and quoted statements of business ethics.
- Is it theTRUTH?
- Is it FAIR to all concerned?
- Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
- Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
The Rotary Motto
Rotary's motto, Service Above Self was first stated in slightly different words in 1910 for the Rotary Club of Minneapolis, and was officially adopted as a Rotary motto in 1950 as it incorporates the philosophy of unselfish volunteer service.
