The Westwood cleanup was a major success...
This week’s big service event for our club was the community cleanup project in Westwood yesterday. After devoting a lot of attention to youth services and music, with great pleasure I turn this week to community services, a very large and vital part of our club’s activities. The Westwood cleanup was a major success.
A steady stream of cars brought in unwanted things, which were divided into trash to be discarded, and usable goods that could be donated to Interfaith’s thrift store. A very large turnout of club members ensured that we had plenty of of hands and help available. And trucks: Dave Brooks and Scott Lawn brought in truckload after truckload. Happily we were joined by around 16 energetic high school student volunteers from four different schools: Rancho Bernardo, Del Norte, Mount Carmel, and a surprise, Poway High.
As the large dumpsters came in, they got regularly filled by eagerly waiting hands.  I saw John Goodrich in the thick of things as he usually is, loading dumpsters, and Alex Lawn directing and loading. Judy Lutticken took care of us with coffee and donuts. Tony Kraft’s food service business catered lunch for us, soft tacos and trimmings.
A big Hats Off this week to Jim Hyldahl, community service chair, for planning, organizing, and supervising this excellent event. I don’t usually post photos on my message, but this week I will post Bill Brehm’s group photo, to show all members who couldn’t make it what a large scale event this was. With around thirty Rotarians participating, I can’t mention everyone by name, but a big Rotary “thank you” to all club members who gave their Saturday morning for “Service Above Self.” Truly a great day of Rancho Bernardo Rotary service to the community.
